Not a
Documentation
Service.
Engineering, at most fabricators, happens after the design decision is made. The system is selected, the specification is written, and then someone produces the documentation required to permit it. That’s not engineering. That’s paperwork.
Northern Facades engineering is the process by which a panel system gets resolved. It starts when the project is in schematic design — in coordination with the design team as the details are being drawn. Our engineers participate in those conversations, not as documentation support, but as the people who understand what the envelope system can and cannot do.
Our engineering team works alongside drafting and production in the same facility. When a question arises — a connection that won’t clear a structural member, a panel size that creates unacceptable thermal movement, a joint that won’t drain in the expected direction — the answer is a conversation. Not a formal RFI. Not an email chain. A conversation, resolved the same day, before anything is cut.
What Our Engineers Deliver.
Structural Analysis
Panel span tables, wind load calculations, seismic assessment, and connection design. Stamped engineering available where required by jurisdiction.
Shop Drawings
Complete panel layout, elevation, section, and connection detail drawings. Coordinated with the architectural construction documents and the structural engineer’s drawings.
Air & Water Testing
ASTM E330, E331, and AAMA 501 test records for all applicable systems. Mock-up design and test coordination where required by the specification.
Thermal Modelling
Thermal Movement
Material-specific expansion and contraction analysis. Slip joint and slotted connection design. Panel sizing validated against the expected movement range for the specific climate and exposure.
Custom Conditions
Non-standard panel conditions, complex geometry, atypical site conditions. The engineering-first approach for projects that don’t fit standard details — which is most interesting projects.
Code Minimum is the Starting Point. Not the Target.
Building codes establish the minimum below which a system cannot be permitted. They are not a performance standard. They are a legal threshold.
Northern Facades engineers don’t design to code minimum. They design to the performance requirements of the building.
Every system we engineer is designed to perform over the service life of the building — through years of thermal cycling, seasonal moisture exposure, UV degradation, and structural load. That durability standard is not applied at the end of the engineering process. It is embedded in the beginning of it.
